Assume Every One Else Is Wrong
Have you ever noticed how ingrained people's cycling opinions can become? The biases you'll find in any bicycle shop are as busy as all the goings on in the halls of Valhalla on the day the Gods burned their Palace down. I've rarely seen biases presented with such assured certainty - short, that is, of the world's most outlandish religious cults. When we take our bikes in for a service, can we be sure that what we are riding isn't a mechanical chorus glued together by biases we, personally, might not share? And, to be totally outrageous, some of we customers might have some biases of our own to assert! Yes, the bicycle shop can become a battlefield of contested points of view! Fashion Spotting 101. The new sport for those who get a kick from watching people reveal all their insecurities and foibles via the clothes they wear. It's a fun game to play. But it's a game with hidden depths. The goal is to confuse those without an eye for detail. We can belong to many tribes; all at the self same time. Our memberships can be consistent with deeper memes; or designed to confuse. And, of course, cyclists are definitely not immune. Our tribe is pretty easy to spot!
