Going Slow
Does life seem to be speeding up because I am forever going slower? Or are we caught up in a world gone mad with reaching ever more distant destinations and ever more impatience with things that get in our way? Consider a simple thought experiment. Consider what it would be like if the whole world were, somehow, to become speed restricted to the pace of our pedal powered bikes. Consider what that might mean for local communities and for the pace of globalisation. Would it necessarily be bad if we all slowed down? With all the people in the world these days, you'd reckon there would be more individuals willing to stand out from the crowd than there apparently are. Why then are so very many of our leaders all, basically, the same except for distinctions of ever so subtle difference? It's hard to sort one suit from another in places like politics and business. Which does not necessarily mean that things don't get done or those who do stand out are necessarily better, but it is so nice to to be woken up occasionally by someone who is indeed, different. This week's story in Bicyclism Blog is about a politician who cycles a lot. It's fascinating to note the reactions from those who share a deep pathology for difference; particularly among the press. I reckon cyclists have what it takes to make a difference, particularly with leadership. So I am fascinated by this latest Aussie pollie who likes to meet and greet while out on his bike.
